Market News for the Prepared Mind: 8.29 - 9.6.2016

"Chance favors the Prepared Mind." - Louis Pasteur

“Imagination decides everything.” - Blaise Pascal

“The end-of-summer winds make people restless.” – Sebastian Faulks

“September tries its best to have us forget summer.” – Bern Williams

The summer doldrums hit their peak during the two weeks preceding Labor Day weekend.  Market volumes are at their lowest, many market participants are on vacation and earnings announcements have slowed to a trickle.  Literature and other media portray the end of summer as being an event to anticipate with a sense of melancholy and dread.  As a trader, I look forward to the end of summer.   Market players return to the market with renewed energy.  The doldrums are replaced with focus and a sense of purpose.

The entire week was focused on the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank’s annual monetary policy symposium, discussing "Designing Resilient Monetary Policy Frameworks for the Future," held Thursday and Friday in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. In the past, the Jackson Hole stage has been used by Fed chairs to speak on prospects for US and global economies, in addition to discussing the direction and timing of future interest rates.  Fed Chair Janet Yellen did not disappoint.  She stated the case higher interest rates had become stronger, but the rise would gradual.  Stanley Fischer clarified her remarks by stating Yellen’s remarks were consistent with hike rates in September and December.  Fischer’s statement led to an end-of-week sell off.

Here is an overview of the US market behavior last week:

Trader and analyst sentiment for a higher VIX (and lower S&P 500) was borne out by last week’s VIX movement.  The VIX rose nearly 20% even though the S&P500 was down a trivial 0.68%.  The VIX futures did not reflect the move in the cash VIX.  Trading of spreads in the VIX options was dominated by spreads which could be characterized as bullish for the VIX and bearish for the S&P 500.

The coming week is “employment week.” The week. which includes the first Friday of the new month, is characterized by a host of domestic employment reports culminating in Friday’s announcement of the Employment Situation Report for the previous month.  The week of August 29 includes the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index and manufacturing numbers from China. But all eyes will be on the U.S. Employment Situation report on Friday. In the interim, investors and traders will spend their time trying to divine interest rate increases by parsing the words of Janet Yellen at Jackson Hole. The week of August 29 includes the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index and manufacturing numbers from China.
This quarter’s earnings season is drawing to a close. The earnings highlights this week for widely held and actively traded stocks include:  Scansource, H&R Block, Abercrombie & Fitch, Bob Evans Farms, Semetech, Oxford Industries, Brown-Forman, salesforce.com, Campbell Soup, Verifone, Genesco, Ciena, Vera Bradley, and Broadcom.

I have an expanded initial scan for earnings play candidates over the next month.  You should further filter any of the stocks with your own risk/reward criteria.  This scan is available as a PDF.  Contact me a fjfahey@gmail.com if you would like it sent to you or if you would like to be removed from the distribution list for additional scans.
